Minister underlines the newly inaugurated livestock terminal set to prop up Ethiopia’s live animal export
Minister of Agriculture Mr. Oumer Hussein underscored the huge benefit the new Dorale Multi-Purpose Port livestock terminal will have on proping up Ethiopia’s livestock export during the inauguration ceremony where Djiboutian Minister of Transport Moussa Mohamed Ahmed, Ethiopian Ambassador to Djibouti Berhanu Tsegaye, Chairman of the Djibouti International Port and Free Zones Aboubaker Omar Hadi, Director General of DMP & PDSA Djama Ibrahim Darar and scores of high level officials from both sides were in attendance.
In his remarks, the Minister noted that though Ethiopia has one of the largest livestock populations in Africa with diverse and adaptable genotypes; due to lack of livestock market structure, illegal live animal trade, poor handling of animals’ transportation from source to destinations, etc; the sector has remained stagnant. Mr. Oumer added, the Government is now aware of the livestock industry’s potential to reduce poverty, promote food security, increase high-value exports, bring in valuable foreign exchange.
Hence, it is now putting in place the necessary policies and mechanism to hone the capacity of the sector.Minister Oumer noted the resting area will lessen the challenges the country is facing in ensuring the safe & timely delivery as well as direct export without the need to pass another certification in Djibouti.
