Ethiopian Orthodox Church Patriarch returns to Ethiopia — New Business Ethiopia
Abune Mathias, Ethiopian Orthodox ChurchPatriarch, has returned to Addis Ababa today, Ethiopia, after completing his treatment in the United States.
The Church has held welcome ceremonies at Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport as well as at St. Marry Church, Arat Kilo. Abune Mathias was admitted to North America for treatment at the end of July 2022.
The welcoming event indicated that Abune Matias was in better health and had returned to Ethiopia. Abune Mathias (born Teklemariam Asrat, 5 January 1941) has been the current patriarch of Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. He succeeded Abune Paulos, the former patriarch who died in 2012 shortly after the sudden passing of Meles Zenawi the late Prime Minister.
Like his predecessor, Patriarch Abune Mathias comes from Tigray region in Ethiopia. Patriarch Abune Mathias made controversial and pro Tigray comments to Tigray TV. He emphasized only the damage done to Tigray region by the war between TPLF troops and Ethiopian troops that began in November 2020.
During the war millions of people in Afar-Amhara regions of Ethiopia were displaced by the inversion to TPLF in these two regions. This led to the deaths of thousands and property damage. But, Patriarch Abune Mathias didn’t mentioned those sufferings taking side to his ethnic group like the head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom. In his March 2022 interview with Tigray Media House he rather said: “the war is aimed at eliminating Tigray ethnic group from Ethiopia”.
