Ethiopia: State-owned Telecom giant latest to launch national digital ID registration in 29 cities

Ethio_Telecom, Ethiopia’s state-owned telecommunications company, has joined efforts to register millions of Ethiopians for digital identification across the country. The company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National ID Ethiopia on Wednesday, enabling Ethio-Telecom to begin registering Ethiopians at 29 service centers in various cities, including the capital Addis Abeba.

Under the agreement, Ethio-Telecom aims to register up to one million Ethiopians per month, with a total target of registering 32 million individuals, constituting 36% of the national plan.

The National ID program also received a significant boost as the Ethiopian Bankers Association signed an agreement with Lamino Engineering PLC. The agreement involves the supply of 6000 Digital ID registration equipment worth 1 billion birr, enabling more than 11,000 bank branches across the country to offer registration services.

Since its launch, the National ID Ethiopia portal reports that 4,680,152 Ethiopians have been registered to receive the Fayda Digital ID Card. In December 2023, the program received $350 million in financing from the World Bank to support its implementation.
