PM Abiy Ahmed Officially Launches Electricity Production From GERD’s Second Turbine.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has officially launched electricity production from the second turbine of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

On the occasion, the Prime Minister called on the generation to place the nation on a firm foundation thereby fulfill the dreams of the forefathers.

“The GERD is the historical project on which Ethiopians have invested their labor, money and knowledge,” the Premier underlined.

The Prime Minister congratulated all Ethiopians for making the dreams of their ancestors by realizing production of electric power from the Grand dam. GERD’s Unit 9 has started production of electricity with a capacity of 270 MW of electricity.

Unit 10 which was inaugurated last February is currently generating 270 MW of electricity. Combined, the two turbines will produce a total of 540 MW of electricity which is equivalent to the output from Gibe I and II. GERD has 155m height and 1.8km length.
